It was the first tract of land surveyed by the Huguenot settlers. This may be the oldest house in the county. Huguenot settler Peter Chastain received a patent here in the early 1700s. The frame part of today's main house was built in 1720 by Chastain, who left it to his son at his death in 1728; he is buried on the grounds. In 1875 Mr. Morton operated the mill for a time then sold to John B. Hutchens, grandfather of George, Ted and Harry Hutchens, who succeeded their father. J. F. Black, Lottie Hamilton, had an interest in the mill. This mill passed into Hutchens' ownership in 1889.
