Tracking down the ancestors: John Miller
His birth year is estimated based on his age at time of death: 78 years.
His place of birth is unclear. We know that he and his wife Sarah, whose
maiden name may have been Delaney, were living in Virginia by or before
1779 when their oldest child John Jr was born, and that they remained
there until about 1790 but we don't know if he and Sarah were also born
in Virginia.
They moved to Tyrone Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania by or before 1790 per census record, confirmed by their children's 1850 census records. They moved to Redstone Township by or before 1800 per census records.
They moved to Ohio by or before 1804. He was one of the founders of Beech Spring Presbyterian Church, which first convened in 1804. Beech Spring Presbyterian Church is no longer standing but at one time, it was next to the cemetery.
He was listed on a land patent for Jefferson County (an area that is now Green Township, Harrison County) on 10 September 1806, with Philip Delaney listed as assignee for John Miller. Ohio Census records him living in Jefferson County, and Wayne Township, Jefferson County in 1806 and 1807, respectively, but I believe the area where he and his family settled was in an area of Jefferson County that became Harrison County when that county was formed in 1813. Ohio Census Records list them living in Green Township, Harrison County, Ohio in 1809.
Date of death and burial location provided by Historical collections of Harrison County, in the state of Ohio, with lists of the first land-owners, early marriages (to 1841), will records (to 1861), burial records of the early settlements, and numerous genealogies, and his will, written 19 Mar 1824, proved 17 Oct 1826. He named his wife Sarah, and his children, John, Samuel, Elizabeth, Catharine, Mary, Sarah, Esther, and Hannah in his will. Will execs: John Taggart, Andrew Eagleson. Witnesses: Thomas Rea, John Rea, Andrew Rea.
