John D. Morton and Mary "Polly" Harader biographical sketch. Contains false family legend information.
Compiled by Dona Morton Adams, Betty Morton Baird, Mary Klock Silverthorn and Betty Allison Moore in 1977, from Eva Morton Woods' notes from "The Tribe of John" in 1943, and gathered from Bibles in the homes of Silas Lute Morton of Fresno, California and Joshua Morton of Grants Pass, Oregon in 1922.
John Morton, Sr., 1815-1892, was the 3rd son and 3rd child1 of William Morton and Elizabeth Harry Norton [sic]. This family was closely related to Zachary Taylor of Orange County, Virginia (who was 12th president). Zachary Taylor was a nephew of James Madison (4th president). [T]radition says that "Zach" was a cousin of Grandfather John Morton.2
Great Grandmother "Polly" was born in Virginia3 on November 4, 1817. She was of "Dutch" descent, her family came from Swartzeneau, Germany. Great Grandfather John Morton, Sr. taught her to speak English.
They had 5 sons and 8 daughters: Silas, Sarah, Mary, Moses, Katherine4, Amy, Phoebie5, Elizabeth and John (or John Lawsha), Isiaac [sic], Joshua, Caroline (or Lina) North6. They were of Scotch Irish blood and a bit of English, and Quakers; and all were Millers by trade.
"In the fall of 1870, the Mortons, with relatives, in an ox team wagon train moved southward from Virginia, crossing the Missouri River and south to the foothills and streams of the Ozark Mountains and settled in Barry county. 1. This is incorrect. He was the 4th son and 6th child born to William and Elizabeth Harry Morton.
2. This is a false connection. Zachary Taylor and James Madison are related - they are 2nd cousins - but John Morton, Sr., isn't related to either of them.
3. She was born in Preston County, which was Virginia at the time she was born, but is now a county in West Virginia. The state split during the Civil War; Virginia siding with the Confederacy and West Virginia siding with the Union.
4. Her name was recorded as Catherine, not Katherine.
5. Records show her name was spelled as Phebe.
6. This is the only reference to a middle name of "North" that I've found.
7. This is not quite accurate. The family traveled by ox team from what was Virginia at the time, but they started their journey decades earlier than 1870, with stops in Indiana and Iowa on the way to Barry County, Missouri.
