James Allen Skinner, biographical sketch by Lisa Allison Albert

Sources used include government and family records for James, Francis, their parents and their siblings.

James’ parents were married in Fauquier County, Virginia in 1823 so James was likely born in Fauquier County, too, but records do not confirm that suspicion.

In 1827, James moved with his parents, Asa and Martha Jane Haley Skinner, and his older brother Mark to Licking County, Ohio per the biographical sketch for their younger brother John Haley Skinner, Sr., published in the History of Licking County, Ohio: Its Past and Present. It’s likely they moved in fall after the harvest, which means that his sister Lucinda, born 5 Aug 1827, was also born in Virginia. However, because she died so young, there are few records available to accurately determine her place of birth.

The family settled first in Bowling Green, Licking County, Ohio, before finally settling in Hanover, Licking County, Ohio, prior to the 1840 census, where Asa and Martha Jane lived out the remainder of their lives.

James and Frances married in 1847, per Eva’s notes, presumably in Licking County, Ohio, since their daughters Margaret Minerva (also seen as Margaret Minerva) and Mary Elizabeth were born in Hanover, Sep 1848 and Sept 1850, respectively.

Sometime after Mary was born, the family moved to El Paso, McLean County, Illinois (see note below), where all but their last child was born: Martha Jane, Dianna, Eliza Ellen, Olive Delona (Ollie), John F (Jack), and Emma Dell.

They moved to Barry County, Missouri after the 1870 census was taken and before their last child, Arthur Oliver, was born 28 Feb 1871.

They moved to Bushnell, Sumner County, Kansas, sometime in the 1870s. James spent his final three months in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas, so he could receive, sadly unsuccessful, treatment for Bright’s disease. The attending physician of record was Dr. C. C. Furley.

Several of James’ and Francis’ siblings journeyed westward with them, including James’ brothers Mark and Asa Williams Jr., and sisters Martha Skinner Shepard and Parmelia (Millie) Skinner Turner, and Francis’ brothers Benjamin and Titus Phillips.

Notes:
James’ granddaughter Eva Morton Wood’s (via his daughter Martha Jane Skinner) 1923 family history notes lists his date of birth as 14 Aug 1825, which contradicts his age at death, as inscribed on his headstone: 52 yrs, 7 ms and 10 ds. If Eva’s notes are correct, he would have been 53 years, 6 months & 18 days when he died.

Census records for McLean County, Illinois reported their place of residence as Gridley, a town a few miles from El Paso, which is where Eva noted they were living at the time; El Paso was not a location option for the census.
